If you have one week in Morocco, the classic route from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara is the best way to see the most famous sights. It combines two imperial cities, mountain landscapes, ancient kasbahs and a night under the stars in the dunes.
This route is best done with a hosted small-group trip, because public transport to the desert is slow and the most beautiful stops are along the way.
Days 1 and 2: Marrakech
Settle into a riad in the medina and spend your first day exploring the souks, the Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque, then watch Jemaa el-Fna square come alive at sunset. On day 2, visit the Majorelle Garden, take a cooking class or start the day with a hot air balloon flight over the palm grove.
Day 3: Over the High Atlas to the Dades Valley
Cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops in Berber villages. Explore Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village, then continue through Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses to spend the night in the Dades Valley.
Day 4: Todra Gorge and the Sahara
Walk between the high walls of the Todra Gorge, then drive past the palm groves of Tinghir to Merzouga. At sunset, ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes and spend the night in a desert camp with dinner and music around the fire.
Day 5: Sunrise in the desert, then north
Wake up early for sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, head north through the Ziz Valley and its palm groves, and cross the Middle Atlas. Spend the night in Midelt or continue towards Fes if you prefer a longer day.
Day 6: Ifrane and Fes
Drive through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where Barbary macaques live, and stop in Ifrane, the little alpine-style town. Arrive in Fes in the afternoon and settle into your riad.
Day 7: The medina of Fes
Explore Fes el-Bali, one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, with a local guide. See the famous Chouara tannery, the Al Quaraouiyine area and the artisans at work, then enjoy a last dinner on a rooftop.

Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for Morocco?
Seven days is enough to see Marrakech, the Atlas, the Sahara and Fes at a comfortable pace. With 10 to 14 days you can add Chefchaouen, the coast or a mountain trek.
Should I start in Marrakech or Fes?
Both work. Start where your flight is cheapest. Marrakech has more international flights, which is why most itineraries start there.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?
About 560 km, or 9 to 10 hours of driving. We split it over two days with stops at Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges.
