Money in Morocco: Cash, Cards and Tipping on a Group Trip

The dirham, ATMs, where cards work and how tipping works in Morocco: everything you need for a relaxed group trip.

The currency of Morocco is the dirham (MAD). It is generally not available outside the country, so you get it on arrival.

Getting dirhams

  • ATMs at the airport and in all towns: the easiest option
  • Exchange offices in the cities, with posted rates
  • Bring a card that works abroad and tell your bank you travel

Cards or cash?

Cards are accepted in many hotels, big restaurants and modern shops. Cash is needed in the souks, small cafés, villages and at the desert camp.

Tipping

Tips are part of the culture in Morocco and are appreciated by guides, drivers, camp staff and restaurant waiters. On hosted trips, the host or our team often suggests a simple way to tip as a group at the end of the trip.

Bargaining in the souks

  • Prices in the souks are not fixed: bargaining is normal and friendly
  • Decide what the item is worth to you before asking the price
  • Smile, take your time, and walk away politely if you do not agree
