Moroccans are famous for their hospitality. Respecting a few customs makes every encounter warmer.
Twelve simple tips
- Say "Salam alaikum" to greet, and "shukran" to thank
- Always ask before photographing people
- Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered in villages and medinas
- Use your right hand to eat and to give or receive things
- Accept the mint tea when it is offered: it is a sign of welcome
- Non-Muslims cannot enter most mosques (the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is an exception)
- Public displays of affection are best kept discreet
- Bargain with a smile in the souks; it is a conversation, not a fight
- Say no politely but firmly to unofficial guides
- Remove your shoes when entering a home
- Try a little Darija or French: people love it
- Be patient: things often take a little longer, and that is part of the charm
