The Moroccan Hammam: A First-Timer's Guide

Steam, black soap and a serious scrub: here is everything you need to know before your first hammam in Morocco.

The hammam is a weekly ritual for many Moroccans and one of the favourite experiences on wellness and women's trips.

Public or spa hammam?

Public hammams are local, simple and separate for men and women. Spa hammams in riads and hotels are calmer and private for your group. Hosted trips usually use spa hammams.

How it works

  • You relax in a warm, steamy room
  • Black soap (savon beldi) is spread on your skin
  • An attendant scrubs you with a kessa glove
  • You are rinsed, sometimes with a ghassoul clay mask
  • Many spas finish with a massage

What to wear

Swimwear or the disposable underwear provided by the spa. Towels and slippers are given.

After the hammam

Drink water, rest and enjoy your incredibly soft skin. Avoid the sun just after.

Frequently asked questions

Is it mixed?

Public hammams are separate for men and women. Spa hammams can be private for a couple or a group.

Is it suitable when pregnant?

Ask your doctor first; the heat is intense.
